Abstract

|
Hip fractures commonly occur in the elderly population with osteoporosis and are classified as either femoral neck fractures, intertrochanteric or subtrochanteric fractures. The surgical options for management of these fractures are either internal fixation or arthroplasty. The usage of internal fixation device allows preservation of the patients¡¯ own joint but it has a disadvantage of delayed rehabilitation. Arthroplasty surgery allows earlier rehabilitation but there are risks of dislocation and higher perioperative mortality. Taking patients general condition into consideration, surgical management of hip fractures should be performed as early as possible to allow early rehabilitation, to minimize medical complications and eventually to reduce duration of hospitalization.
